Communion Season May 06 2017

Hi Ladies

Well May has arrived so that can only mean one thing,  that the Holy Communion season is well and truly upon us.

Not only do the Girls and Boys who are receiving their Holy Communion need to get their outfits sorted but the whole family need to be kitted out for the special day with all the emphasis on the ladies from Mum's, sisters, aunts to the grand mothers.  Whether you are having family and friends over to celebrate the day or going to a venue for a meal it's a great excuse for the entire family to get dressed up.

The big colour trends this season are blues, pinks and mints.  They are all very wearable colours for the Irish skin tone. If you like the full skirt or straight structure we have something for everyone here in the Boutique.

The important thing to remember is to dress to suit your shape and we, at the boutique, would love to help you to do just that.

The Confirmation dilemma. March 01 2017

At last it's time to start thinking about springtime and with Spring comes the celebrations of Confirmation and Communion.

But what to wear ?

This year there has been a burst of floral colour at the Boutique. O.K. so the day is not all about you but it is important that you look and feel special on the day ! The dipped hemline has made an appearance again this year for those of you looking for something a little bit quirky.

Big floral prints are big (excuse the pun ) this year in lovely deep colours of emerald green or violet blues.

But if your not brave enough for loud patterns, don't worry there is a beautiful selection of skirts and tops in several colour blocks.

The important thing to remember is to dress to suit your shape and we, at the boutique, would love to  help you to do just that.

Wonderful Weddings April 28 2016

Wedding season is indeed upon us and every guest wants to look fabulous, while being careful not to outdo the bride.

How to look Fabulous !!

First pick a fabulous dress, but be careful, you must pick a dress that flatters your shape. For example if your bust area is your problem then v necks or a soft cowl neckline will be much more flattering than a high round neck.

Small bust's should opt for a higher, decorative neckline as this will add bulk to this area.

For a pear shape figure go for a flared skirt this will conceal your hips rather than point them off.

Ruching has been a godsend for those of us with a tummy problem and a soft peplum will give you the same result.

A heavily patterned dress will add on the pounds so be careful.

Once the dress is decided, don't forget to finish the outfit with some amazing jewellery and of course top it off with an amazing headpiece!!

Here are some of the new collections suitable for weddings on sale in our Boutique or on line.

Happy Shopping.

Don't skirt around the issue !! December 02 2015

Separates are the staple of every wardrobe and the versatile skirt is a piece that will serve you well.

For the season that's in it ie: Christmas, it's nice to have one you can dress up. Something like a chiffon skirt is ideal for this. With it's full skirt it can be adapted to give you that party look.

The faux leather is huge this season too and the flared version can give such a cute look.

Boucle fabric, also big this season giving a Chanel like look to your outfit. Worn short, it gets rid of the stuffy work look, or worn with woolly tights and long boots can be turned around and perfect for work.

And then there's the midi skirt, which really can be adapted to suit any occassion. It's simply a matter of which top to go with it.

Terrific Tunics July 04 2015

When all is said and done we all like to have something functional and comfy in our wardrobe. That's where the tunic comes in. They are not fitted so they don't show off the dreaded lumps and bumps.

Having said that some are more structured then others which leaves them comfortable but flattering.

Long sleeves are probably the norm but they do come with short sleeves or even sleeveless.

The important thing to remember when buying a tunic is to buy your size and not to be tempted to buy a size smaller just because it feels loose. This will defeat the purpose.

Every wardrobe should have one! They are an essential staple, like our LBD you will pull it out again which will ensure sufficient cost per wear is achieved.

Here are some tunics from our Boutique.

The Need For Neon June 23 2015

As the sun has finally come out play, nothing says summer fashion like neon colour ways.

This Spring/Summer collection at the boutique includes some fabulous designer dresses in neon as well as some casual looks for the more laid back days out.

If your not relying on Irish weather and going abroad then neon looks amazing on tanned skin. A neon top with skinny cropped jeans is perfect for that casual night out when on hols.

But of course we Irish are great at dealing with our weather and have learned to cheat by using spray tan. While neon can be tricky to pull off on pale skin,  my advice is stick to colours which suit your completion and just opt for them in a neon tonal palette.

Here are a few of our Summer Brights from Picket Fence.

Simply Shoes May 15 2015

Shoes glorious shoes or was that food?

We can never have enough, or is it that we always want more? Either way we love them and we need them. So we are delighted to have the fabulous Amy Huberman S/S 2015 Shoe Collection in store now. There is a fantastic choice no matter what your shoe fetish is.

Sandal/Peep Toe

Summer is a great time to show off your newly painted toes with the open toe sandal or the peep toe shoe. This year we see the continuation of the platform which makes it easier and more comfortable to wear the high heel.

Wedge:

Wedges, of course can't be beaten for comfort. You can last all day in quite a high wedge which makes them ideal for work. Depending on what they are teamed with you can dress these bad boys up for a night on the tiles or pear them back for a casual look.

Heels:

Of course a high heel gives you an elegant  stance and oozes sex appeal as they help elongate the legs!

Pumps:

Well this is the year of the pumps and my are they pretty. From the very flat to the slightly raised heel, they are available in a wonderful range of colours.

Here is a selection from our boutique.

Confirming Fashion. April 22 2015

It's always hard to dress a teenage girl. They haven't quite finished growing but their mind seems to have shot ahead. Getting the balance between adult and child is never easy.

Firstly concentrate on the colour. Bright is best, being young the only thing standing in the way of colour is if they actually hate that colour. Even if black is their favourite you can always go black but make sure there is a little hint of something bright that you can pick out for a cardigan or jacket.

Next is the cut. Nothing too daring and nothing too short, you have the excuse of the church for this one. Take into account your daughters shape. Soft pleats on the waist are good if they have not quite developed a waist yet. A full skirt with a gathered waistline will give some shape where it is needed.

Here are some confirmation style dresses from our boutique.

New Year Is Here January 16 2015

Christmas is well and truly over and we are facing into a new year again with unlimited fashionable possibilities! What will the Designers have us wearing this S/S 2015? What is the new colour palette going to be? There is no doubt television and cinema now has a big influence on fashion, particularly Downton Abbey. The 1920's era was certainly obvious in party wear themed attire over the Christmas with beautiful dropped waist dresses and fabulously embellished fabrics. This is not going away any time soon!

Fabrics for the new season will be richer with strong tapestry and small style patterns.

Pastel and candy hues will dominate again. We will see cool blues, sorbet yellows and blush pinks taking front stage.

Lace of course is still being used whether it is just as a small detail or completely covering a dress.

Here is a sample of the above from the Picket Fence Boutique.

Simply Sleeves. December 24 2014

What is it about us Irish women and sleeves. We have a dreaded fear of revealing our upper arms!

Cap Sleeve: Some of us are happy enough with a little cap sleeve, which covers the bare minimum but is just enough to give the us confidence needed.

3/4 Length: The longer three quarter length definitely will cover the so called 'bad' bits and gives a certain elegance to a top or dress. Designers such as our own Niamh O'Neill tend to go with this particular cut as it suits their elegant style.

Full Length: The full length sleeve is for the most time chosen for comfort and heat. But not anymore as we have some sexy, stylish full length sleeves in stock now!

As it's party season and of course we all want to look amazing the thought of  a long sleeve might sometimes  seem too safe and heaven forbid look frumpy, but never fear! Though a lot of party dresses are indeed sleeveless, you can still get some with sleeves. A Sheer sleeve is going to cover everything you want but still stick with the party theme. Lace sleeves can also be a go to during the Christmas party season..

So if it is a sleeve you want a sleeve you shall have. Here are my top picks available in store now at Picketfence.

It's Party Season - dress to flatter your shape December 06 2014

It's party season so of course you need a new dress!

Don't panic if the fad diets you promised yourself you would stick to have been unsuccessful. The trick is to dress yourself according to your shape. Be happy with the shape you are. A confident woman will look fantastic no matter what her shape.

The trick is to draw the eye away from the problem areas to the more flattering part's of your body.

Here are some tips of the trade from us here At Picket Fence Boutique:

1-V-Neck styles are very flattering to a larger bust and stay away from fussy patterns as they will only emphasize this area.

2- A soft peplum or some ruching will hide a tummy problem.

3-Dresses with darker side panels will give the illusion of a much slimmer silhouette.

4-Pattern can add pounds so be careful.

5-If you're blessed with a tiny waist empire lines are ideal as they focus the eye to this area.

6-For the smaller busted lady opt for a high neckline to help add bulk to this area.

Here are some dresses from our boutique that will fulfill your party needs, so dress up and enjoy the season with confidence.

Sunshine Bliss August 11 2014

Michael Kors, Christian Dior and J.W. Anderson, to name just a few top end designers, S/S 2014 collection emerged with a fabulously bright colour trend of that of the ‘Yellow’ colour palette. Yellow is the new pink this season and plays a dominant role over many genres within the fashion lines due to its vibrant, stimulating qualities. This season’s go to shade comes in a variety of different tones which is of benefit to us Irish as we sport many different complexions. The intensity of the shade you choose depends on your skin tone and most importantly the love of the colour. Here are my tonal tips when choosing the correct shade to suit your complexion.

For those who are pale with the Irish freckle breaking through who have warm tones in your hair I would advise a warmer shade of yellow such as ‘Daffodil’.

For the ladies with darker hair tones and jewel like eyes you need an intense shade of yellow, so I would look towards ‘Primrose’ Shades.

Those who have blonde to grey tones in their hair and are either fair or tanned skin I would opt for a cooler yellow palette such as a ‘Lemon Yellow’

As it’s one of the key colour trends this season my advice is try it on as I can guarantee there is a shade of yellow for every complexion.

Maximum impact July 16 2014

One item of clothing that is a must this season no matter what height, size or age you are is the MAXI dress. This is an easy one fix wonder which can take you from day to night by simply re-adjusting your accessories. However some ladies have issue’s with this garment when it comes to purchasing the ideal style to suit their body shape. So I have made it my aim to tackle and put to rest any conundrums  that might face you when it comes to camouflaging  5 key problem areas.

Large Bust:

-Deep V neckline is great to minimize a large bust.

-Thicker straps allow you to wear a supportive bra.

-Keep detail to a minimum around the bust area as the more detailing and material there are the larger your bust will look.

Small Bust:

-The more elaborate the detail around the chest area the better as this will help emphasize a smaller chest.

-Ideally you would avoid deep V’s or scooped necklines as they will showcase the lack of a bust line. Stick with a higher neckline if possible.

-Finish the look by adding a long pendant, chain or necklace which will assist in adding further bulk to this area.

Prominent Stomach

-Detailing around the neckline will distract the eye to a more flattering aspect of your body.

-Ruching across the front will help give a slimmer silhouette as it discreetly camouflage’s any stomach issues.

-The Empire-line will glide over your stomach as this style of dress/top gently comes out into an A to skim your stomach, hip and thigh region.

Petite Lady:

-The heavier the material the better as it falls straight down which is flattering for a petite frame.

-Empire line dresses are ideal as they lengthen the body.

-Go for a smaller print as to avoid over powering your look.

- Its important to remember the smaller you are the narrower the ends of your fabrics should be, so avoid any dresses where the hemline is too full or flouncy.

Wide Hips:

-The wider and more detailing on straps the more your body is balanced. So if you find your bottom heavy then you need to emphasize your shoulder line which in turn will give a balanced silhouette. So wear cap sleeves, puff sleeves, a structured shoulder line, sow in shoulder pads or go for tops/dresses that have detailed stitch around the shoulder area.

-A nipped in waist will draw the eye upwards to a more flattering part of your body – your waist line.

-Avoid bulk, fuss or detailing around the hip area.

Work That Dress June 18 2014

Work wear every year is evolving and developing into more of a womanly, stylish yet powerful attire. To achieve all three statements can sometimes be a task in itself but when this look is accomplished you will feel feminine, sexy, authoritative and above all confident. Even though power dressing can evoke all these emotions a large number of women believe that it’s a waste of their hard earned cash spending it on work wear, but what I constantly tell women why look and feel fantastic on Saturday night - which is just one night of the week, when you can feel beautiful five days a week? Suits will always be in vogue but to keep it more on trend you need to add a feminine touch such as a high waist trouser’s, cropped fitted jacket or cigarette leg pants. What I find most women are leaning towards is the dress ensemble. It’s your work wear sorted in one easy look.  So here are a sample of work wear dresses available at Picket Fence.

Get Minted May 22 2014

One colour trend which is dominating the fashion world this season is that of the mint hue. We are seeing this delicate shade been embraced and extending to all genres of fashion from totes to shoes, to dresses and jackets and even down to our nail polish. This tonal palette is fresh and uplifting and will awaken any dull tiresome ensembles that have crept from your winter wardrobe into that of our S/S wearables.  This however is a tricky colour trend to wear as consideration needs to be given towards the shade of mint you are deliberating on purchasing. If you are pale skin with fair hair then opt for a darker shade of mint as a light shade will inevitable wash you out. Remember, if the dress is a great fit and shape then there is nothing a bit of tan can’t fix! For the sallow skin girls you have the best of both worlds as you can choose between the light and darker options.

Luscious Lace May 10 2014

Lace is a fabric that is not moving out of the reach of many a top designer this season. No matter what the season lace has a dominant fashionable role to play. When we think of lace, elegance, demure and femininity are key words that come to mind. This is a fabric that can take on many genre’s within the fashion realm, whether it be a dress, top, jacket or shoes. We can see lace as a key component to the finished product. Lace as a fabric has never dipped within its popularity status as the key selling component to this fabric is that it’s ageless. No matter what your age you can inject some lace into your life. Here are some samples of fabulous lace numbers available from us At Picket Fence.

Monochrome Madness April 15 2014

It’s a colour palette most prominently associated with the cooler, winter months but this S/S see’s the monochrome trend in full force and been a top go to palette for any forthcoming occasions. The mix of black and white hues will never date and offers those of us who shy away from the colourful neon looks a fashionable escape route for the warmers months. The stark contrast between the dull black and the brightness of the white is a masterful blended combination that we will never tire of.  If you want to put your own refreshing stamp on this stylish trend then inject a splash of colour by means of your accessories, or keep it simple and demure like Channel would have wanted.

Spring/Summer Prints April 09 2014

There is no getting away from print this year. It is strong and more intense then it has every been before. We are not just seeing delicate floral prints which we have come accustomed too; they are vivid, stronger and bolder. We are seeing kaleidoscope print, polka dots, check print, geometric prints, the list goes on. So for those of us who shy away from a daring print number my advice is to embrace it and try add a bit of depth to your ensemble. My one rule of thumb is add print to the more flattering part of your body so for example if you are top heavy then stick with print on the bottom half and vice versa for ladies who are larger on the bottom. Here are some electric print numbers available in store or to buy on line.

And They're Off! April 01 2014

The anticipation of leaning over the rail, with your race book in one hand  and betting slip in another while your heart pounds as you wait for the flag to be raised, thinking to yourself maybe this once you picked a winner! Well, this might not be everyone’s experience at the races. More often then not the anticipation is experienced in the weeks preceding a race meeting for a number of fashionable race goers. The task of selecting that one perfect dress which you feel, will inevitably have you standing on the winners podium is a time consuming process. With all the major race meetings coming up, I decided to make your life easier and show you some spectacular dresses which are on offer.

Remember, every judge loves when you put your own personal touch to an outfit which will make your look unique and special. So be bold and daring with your choices as if the judges’ head doesn't turn you still will have a fabulously stylish girl’s day out.
